The project began not with stone or timber, but with vision. The chosen site overlooked one of the most important transportation corridors in colonial America. From the elevated hillside, the future owner could observe vessels moving along the river while maintaining a strategic view of the surrounding countryside. Before construction could begin, a crew of laborers entered the heavily wooded site. Trees were felled using broad axes and crosscut saws. Brush was burned or removed. Massive stumps were dug from the earth using teams of oxen and horses. What had once been a rugged forested slope gradually became a carefully measured construction site. Surveyors stretched chains across the clearing while master builders marked the locations of future walls, chimneys, doors, and windows with wooden stakes and cord. With the site prepared, attention turned to obtaining the materials needed for construction. Nearby limestone deposits provided the primary building stone. Quarrymen spent long days drilling holes into bedrock using hand-forged iron tools. Wedges were driven into the stone until large sections broke free from the ledges. The thunderous sound of splitting rock echoed through the valley as enormous blocks were separated from the earth. The freshly quarried stone then had to be shaped. At the same time, masons completed the towering stone chimneys that rose above the roofline. These chimneys would serve numerous fireplaces throughout the house and quickly became one of the structure's defining architectural features. As construction progressed, the castle became the center of a bustling worksite. Blacksmiths sharpened tools and forged hardware. Teamsters delivered additional materials. Laborers mixed mortar and carried supplies. Carpenters installed doors, windows, floors, and interior woodwork. Every trade contributed to the final result. Months of effort gradually transformed a forest clearing into a substantial stone residence unlike anything else in the surrounding countryside. The final phase involved hundreds of smaller tasks. Windows were glazed. Doors were hung. Floors were finished. Hardware was installed. Fireplaces were completed. The surrounding grounds were graded and fenced. Paths connected the house to nearby outbuildings, docks, and work areas. At last, the scaffolding came down. For the first time, the completed castle stood fully revealed. Its thick limestone walls glowed in the sunlight above the Hudson River. Smoke drifted from the chimneys. Livestock grazed in nearby pastures. Boats moved along the river below while family members and workers carried on their daily activities around the property. The house immediately became more than a residence. It served as the center of a working estate, a landmark for river travelers, and a visible symbol of stability in a rapidly developing region. Captains navigating the Hudson could identify the property from great distances. Visitors arriving at the landing looked up to see the stone structure dominating the hillside. Generations would pass through its doors. Children would be born beneath its roof. Families would celebrate milestones around its fireplaces. Farmers, merchants, sailors, and travelers would come to know the castle as one of the defining landmarks of Coeymans. Today, the story of its construction remains a testament to the extraordinary skill of colonial craftsmen.
