Theophilus Civill House

A large two-story, five-by-four bay Greek Revival style residence.
The building is distinguished by broad paneled corner boards with
ornate capitals supporting a broad frieze and partial eave returns.
A finely crafted entry surround is centered on the first floor of
the facade and is sheltered by a wrap-around Picturesque style
porch. The porch is supported by octagonal columns, which are
spanned by scroll sawn details. The building retains its original
clapboard siding, six-over six light sash, quarter fan gable windows
and original shutters.
Theophilus
Civill (1803-1878)
was
a prominent 19th-century educator and community leader in Coeymans,
New York. Along with Fletcher Blaisdell and Peter Seabridge, he
established the Coeymans Academy in 1858, a significant literary
institution that offered education to both sexes.
The Academy: Founded in 1858, the institution was one of Coeymans'
premier educational facilities during the mid-to-late 19th century.
